How ING Bank Accelerated Releases with 700+ Automated Tests

About ING Bank

Founded in 1991 and headquartered in Amsterdam, ING Bank is one of Europe’s leading financial institutions, serving around 33 million customers across 40 countries with a workforce of nearly 52,000 professionals. In Turkey, ING operates with a strong focus on digital banking innovation and employs approximately 450 IT specialists dedicated to supporting the bank’s transformation journey. As part of its global strategy, ING continues to invest heavily in technology-driven solutions that enhance operational agility, customer experience, and product quality.

Overview

With a growing portfolio of digital products and increasing customer demands, ING Bank recognized the need to strengthen its testing ecosystem and streamline its software delivery process. The organization needed to synchronize the work of 12 different development teams across various platforms, including web, mobile, and legacy systems, all while maintaining high quality and fast release cycles. Partnering with Testinium enabled ING to modernize its DevOps practices, implement Behavior-Driven Development (BDD), and establish a strong foundation for continuous testing. The primary goal was to achieve greater collaboration between business and technical stakeholders, while ensuring that every release met the bank’s quality and compliance standards.

Challenges

  • Coordinating testing efforts across multiple platforms such as web, mobile, and legacy systems
  • Limited automation expertise and insufficient test resources
  • Lengthy manual testing and deployment cycles that delayed product delivery
  • The need for unified processes and consistent quality across 12 development teams
  • Maintaining test visibility and traceability within a complex DevOps environment

Solutions

Testinium worked closely with ING Bank to design and implement a comprehensive automation framework that addressed both process and technology challenges.

  • Introduced a BDD approach to enable collaboration between business analysts, QA teams, and developers. This allowed non-technical users to contribute directly to test creation and validation.
  • Built a customized Selenium Grid that supported both web and mobile test automation, equipped with features like video recording, command logging, and self-healing test capabilities.
  • Created a lightweight automation framework that required minimal coding, empowering QA analysts to create and maintain test scripts efficiently.
  • Trained 23 analysts across 4 key domains, enabling them to adopt the new BDD-based approach effectively and become self-sufficient in test automation.
  • Developed and maintained more than 700 automated test scripts, forming a scalable regression suite that continuously runs as part of ING’s DevOps pipeline.
  • Integrated Testinium’s platform into ING’s CI/CD process, ensuring that testing became an integral part of every deployment cycle.

Results

  • Achieved significant improvement in software release quality and system reliability
  • Increased regression coverage across core banking systems, reducing the risk of production issues
  • Reduced test execution time through automation and parallel testing, enabling faster release cycles
  • Established a strong continuous integration and delivery culture supported by reliable automated testing
  • Reduced manual effort while maintaining compliance and auditability across all product releases

Through its collaboration with Testinium, ING Bank successfully transformed its testing operations into a continuous, scalable, and data-driven process. The partnership helped ING achieve faster go-to-market delivery, improved transparency across teams, and a more predictable software release process.
